Diaries, 6 volumes, 1862-1863, were written by Lieutenant William Lowery. They begin in April of 1862 and the author describes the troop movements of the 20th Alabama until it reached Vicksburg (Miss.) in 1863. Lowery discusses camp life in general, focusing on supplies, weather, social life, and visiting family and the troops; the movement into Kentucky and evaluation of the secession sentiment there; Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; and the movement towards and skirmishes around Vicksburg (Miss.).
